An accountholder wants to place a stop payment on a check written by the joint owner on the account. Can you let them do that? What about stopping payment on a cashier’s check they purchased yesterday? Or stopping payment on a recurring ACH debit? There are specific disclosure requirements regarding stop payments, time periods applicable to oral and written stop payment orders, return reasons used for teller and cashier’s checks that are lost or stolen. Learn what the liability is if the credit union pays an item subject to a valid stop payment order, and what rights the credit union has if a loan check is returned due to a stop payment order.
