Association team meets with NCUA’s Western Region leadership

On Tuesday of last week Association executives joined other leagues to meet with NCUA’s Western Region Director and senior agency staff.

Scott Simpson, CEO of the Utah Association, and Rusty Canon, Chief Advocacy Officer and President, represented Utah in the meeting. NCUA’s delegation was headed by John Kutchey, NCUA’s Interim Western Region director (and current Eastern Region Director). Other leagues from the Western Region also joined in robust discussion.

Agenda topics included:

  • The current credit union environment. NCUA Western Region leadership shared their perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing credit unions today.
  • Hot topics and examination trends. Updates were provided on key areas of supervisory focus, including member complaints, fraud, credit risk, cybersecurity threats, and record-keeping practices.
  • Fair lending and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) referrals. The NCUA provided general insights to several cases of potential fair lending violations that were referred to the DOJ, highlighting the agency’s current efforts in this area.
  • 2025 supervisory priorities. Insights were shared on the NCUA’s focus areas for 2025, helping credit unions anticipate regulatory expectations.

The Leagues also shared concerns about the NCUA’s  requirements for credit unions with over $1 billion in assets to track and report non-sufficient funds (NSF) and overdraft fee income on the Call Report. These requirements pose operational challenges and raise broader questions about potential reputational risks for credit unions.

The conversation further addressed the potential transition in NCUA leadership, with Vice Chair Kyle Hauptman expected to assume the role of chair under the incoming administration.

The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between credit unions, leagues, and the NCUA to address evolving challenges and ensure the continued strength of the credit union movement.
